FairVote
FairVote is a nonpartisan research and advocacy organization dedicated to building elections that work better for every American. We study structural challenges in the American electoral system and advance proven voting reforms that make democracy more competitive, inclusive, and representative at every level of government. FairVote traces its roots to 1992, when several smaller groups promoting proportional representation came together in Cincinnati, Ohio, to form a single national advocacy organization called Citizens for Proportional Representation. From the outset, the organization attracted serious reformers and public figures: Robert Richie served as executive director, Matthew Cossolotto as president, and Steven Hill as western regional director. Former congressman and presidential candidate John Anderson chaired the national advisory board and lent early credibility to the cause, publishing a New York Times commentary that same year calling for instant runoff voting in presidential elections.
